Slack

Slack conversations contain a huge amount of organizational context. Connecting Slack lets Alma extract insights from your channels and direct messages, building a richer picture of what’s happening across your team.

What Alma captures

  • Messages and threads — Conversation context from channels and DMs you have access to.
  • People — Team members and their roles as mentioned in conversations.
  • Action items — Requests, decisions, and follow-ups.
  • Topics — Projects, deals, and other subjects discussed across channels.

Connection types

Slack is unique in that it has both a personal and an organization-level connection. Each unlocks different capabilities.

Personal connection

Each team member connects their own Slack account. This lets Alma extract insights from the channels and DMs that individual user has access to. Personal connections are what most users set up first — they’re the foundation for building your organizational memory from Slack.

Organization connection

A workspace admin installs the Alma Slack app for the entire workspace. This enables agents to actively interact with Slack — posting messages to channels, sending DMs, and reading channel history on behalf of the workspace. The organization connection is required for any agent capabilities that involve writing to Slack.

The organization connection also enables cloud processing of Slack messages for any channels the Alma bot is invited to. This means Alma can continuously extract insights from those channels even when no one has the desktop app running.

Agent capabilities

With the organization connection set up, agents can:

  • Post messages to channels.
  • Send direct messages.
  • Read channels for context when executing responsibilities.

Connecting

Personal connection

  1. Go to SettingsConnections.
  2. Click Connect on Slack.
  3. Sign in with your Slack account and authorize Alma.

Each team member connects their own account to contribute their conversations to the shared memory.

Organization connection

  1. Go to SettingsConnections.
  2. Click Connect Organization on Slack.
  3. A Slack workspace admin authorizes the Alma app for the workspace.

You may need Slack workspace admin approval to install the Alma app, depending on your workspace settings. This only needs to be done once for the whole team.

Managing Alma in Slack threads

By default, Alma participates in any Slack thread where it has been mentioned or is actively responding. You can ask it to step back at any point.

Disengaging from a thread

To have Alma stop responding, tell it something like “You can step out” or “Disengage from this thread.” Alma will acknowledge and stop replying to subsequent messages unless directly @mentioned again.

Re-engaging

To bring Alma back into a disengaged thread, @mention it. Alma will catch up on any messages it missed while away before responding.
